This past week’s Hawaii Five 0 episode is worth reliving, and although not on our usual time, we decided it was one that we could not miss recapping. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
As the episode begins, we see Junior at the academy shooting range and he is doing amazing. Steve arrives to check in with the instructor who tells Steve that the kid, as he puts it, isn’t HPD material. Steve is concerned about this but the instructor clarifies that he’s sharp, quick, the best he’s seen in a while AND he has a streak that reminds him of Steve. No surprise to us as it must be in SEAL blood. Before Steve leaves he makes a lunch date with Junior.
Switch scenes to a retail store where we find Steve looking at used industrial ovens for the restaurant for half the price of a new one. Lou is with him and he tries to convince Steve that this is a purchase that you just don’t make without your business partner present. Steve assures Lou that Danny would approve but when Lou calls Danny to see, Steve tries to stop Lou, telling him Danny would be just about in the middle of his niece’s conformation at the moment. When the phone rings, Steve hangs the phone up on Lou and of course Lou finds this hilarious, just as we do. Just then, Steve gets a call from their friend Toast who is also Five-0’s go-to hacker. As Steve and Lou listen, Toast is being shot. Lou gets Jerry on the phone and has him trace the call to find Toast.
The credits and the wave roll and we envision fans dancing, whistling, humming, or whatever along with it.
After the wave, Steve and Lou are at the scene of Toast’s murder and Noelani is going over the injuries that Toast has suffered to Steve and Lou. They conclude that Toast was tortured before being killed.
On the way back to HQ, Steve and Lou are discussing that this wasn’t just about getting information from Toast, but it was personal.
A call from Jerry interrupts them. Jerry informs them that their system was hacked into the night before and they have no way of knowing how much information was taken but if they can find out who did it they can find Toast’s killer. There’s a problem however and it is they normally would have gone to Toast for help and they need a new hacker friend, so to speak.
We next see Steve and Lou at Halawa prison visiting Aaron Wright. They want Aaron to help them find out who hacked their system. Aaron agrees but for a hefty price. He wants a transfer to a different prison and while working on the case, a luxury room, five star meals, and spa services. Steve first refuses but in the end has no choice because they need to find out what is happening.
The following scene is of Aaron entering a nice suite with Steve. Tani is there waiting and Steve handcuffs Aaron to the desk
.
Back at HQ, Jerry fills Lou in on the suspects that Toast had helped them out on in previous cases and most are still in prison.
Back at the suite, Steve gets a text from Danny saying he will be on the next flight back home because of Toast. Steve texts back saying Danny has come a long way by referring to Hawaii as home.
Tani interrupts and tells Steve to come take a look at what Aaron has. It seems Aaron found the information the hacker took from Five-0’s system and it was of every informant that they have ever worked with. Pictures are shown and we of course recognize the many Five-0 friends from over the years. Now Steve and Tani know that what happened to Toast could happen to any one of the rest of them. They are clearly concerned.
Over at Kamekona’s truck, Steve shows up to meet Junior for lunch. He also asks if Kamekona is around and is told no. When he sits down to talk to Junior, Steve explains that he knows how hard it is after leaving the military and that he will be there for him. He adds that it is important that Junior graduate the academy. Finding out that Junior does not have a cell phone; Steve tells him he will have a phone dropped off at the academy that afternoon.
Steve then gets a call from Jerry telling him that all the informants are accounted for except for Kamekona who is at Flippa’s truck where Steve is now headed.
Back at the hotel suite, Aaron has found the hackers ID as MOGERA, who is a legend in the hacker world. He also shares that Mogera is blind.
We next see Steve arriving at Flippa’s truck which is in flames. When Steve opens the back door he finds Nahele on the floor of the truck. Steve gets Nahele out just in time before the truck explodes throwing them both to the ground. When Nahele recovers, he tells Steve that guys in a black SUV took Kamekona.
As Nahele is treated by paramedics at the scene, Steve gets a phone call from Jerry telling him that he has been unable to track Kamekona’s cell phone and that Lou just brought in the hacker Mogera.
Despite his many threats down in the rendition room, Lou is unable to get the hacker to talk.
We now see a badly beaten Kamekona tied to a chair and questioned about the sum of five hundred thousand dollars and its whereabouts. Enter Joey Kang who Kamekona worked with Five-0 to put in prison. Joey wants his money back and will kill Kamekona if he doesn’t get it. He also knows Kamekona is an informant for Five-0 and is responsible for him being sent to prison. Kamekona tells Joey he doesn’t have the money, he can’t get it back, that he spent it, and that Joey wouldn’t believe him even if he told him what he spent it on.
Switching back to the luxury suite, Tani is pushing Aaron to get the information they need. Aaron all the while is telling Tani that he’s working as fast as he can. Tani gets a text from her brother and is distracted. Aaron tries to get into Tani’s head but she’s having no part of it. She also mentions his no good animalistic brother who kidnapped Samantha some time ago.
Back with Steve, he is on the phone to Lou at HQ, Steve wants an update if they have anything about the whereabouts of Kamekona, Lou tells him nothing yet but they did get a break with Toast’s murder. The gun used was traced to another felony that was traced back to a guy by the name of Kahili Marks. Marks is Kong Lang’s brother in law. Kong was killed in a prison riot and Marks wants to hang that on Toast. Lou tells Steve he has an APB out on Marks.
Meanwhile back at the suite, Tani seems suspicious that Aaron is so quiet and with good reason. Two men storm the room, throw in a smoke canister, and shoot Tani in her bulletproof vest knocking her through a glass table. They cut the handcuffs off of Aaron and as one of the men is about to kill Tani, Aaron stops him.
Now at the scene, Steve and Lou are assessing Aaron’s escape. Tani who is clearly upset tells the paramedics she’s OK and goes out on the balcony. Steve and Lou both agree Tani is lucky to still be alive.
Jerry arrives telling Steve and Lou that that the perp’s van was caught on security cameras and came back registered to Kahili Marks. Lou concludes that the guy who killed Toast was the one that just busted out Aaron. Steve thinks it was a distraction, that Aaron made some sort of deal with Mogera, and that Aaron actually stole the information the first time he hacked into their system. That would guarantee Aaron a way out of prison with Toast out of the picture, and that it was just part of an elaborate plot on Aaron’s part. So now their only hope is to get the blind hacker to talk…so we know what that means.
Yep, as next in the rendition room an angry determined Steve is now there, and with the help of Lou, they force the guy to talk and help them find Kamekona. They all go upstairs and Mogera begins to help.
Jerry is almost in a trance watching the hacker at work as he breezes through firewalls and mainframes with ease. In minutes he is in. They pull up Joey Kang. Steve tells Jerry he wants anything and everything on Joey in detail. They now know Kang has Kamekona.
Back with Kamekona and Kang, Kang prepares to finish off Kamekona by telling everyone they are going for a ride. Before that though, in an emotional dialogue, Kame tells Joey that he should have died in prison eight years ago and everything he has had the opportunity to do since has been a special blessing, so he is ready for what is coming.
The next scene is at Mr. Kang’s auto body shop. (Joey’s father) Steve and the team proceed to try to convince Mr. Kang to get his son Joey to free Kamekona. In typical Steve style when one of his own is in trouble, Steve is pouring gasoline all over the shop cars and propane tanks and then standing there with a lighter. You guessed it, Mr. Kang makes a call and it is just in time to stop Joey from pulling the trigger.
We next see Steve going to the downtown Oahu Mission. As he enters, he seems to be looking for someone and finds Junior studying there. Junior is clearly embarrassed and shocked that Steve found him and asks how he did. Steve tells him when he didn’t answer the phone he gave him, he tracked it to the location. Junior tells Steve someone took the phone and he’s sorry. Steve says it doesn’t matter, that he meant it when he said he was there for him, to get his things, and he’s going to stay at Steve’s house until he graduates from the academy.
A little later at the Tropics Bar & Grill everyone is there to pay tribute to Toast and to say goodbye. Jerry sings and as we’ve come to know he’s quite good.
Steve joins the group with Junior in tow and introduces him to the team, telling them Junior will be staying with him, and to make him feel welcomed. Prior to that, he has a warm brotherly emotional moment with Kamekona.
Steve asks Lou about Tani but he hasn’t seen her. Steve decides to go to her home and when he arrives we get to see Eddie who he has brought with him. (YAY). She asks if he is keeping him and Steve replies he thinks it is the other way around.
Steve sits down with Tani and tells her they missed her at the Tropics. Tani said she wanted to be alone. He tells her that it wasn’t her fault that Aaron got away and it was his fault for taking Aaron out of jail in the first place. It was a learning experience for them both and to move on. He adds that she is right for the job and that he and Eddie were staying for a while, (Steve fixing another broken toy).
The final scene is of Kamekona a few days later at a basketball game for kids and he’ is talking to coach Eli. Coach says it has been a while since he’s been in to see the kids. He tells Kamekona he needs to come by more often and Kamekona agrees. As they say goodbye Kamekona passes by a plaque on the wall that reeds ” Waianae Community Gym, EST. 2010 Donated By Anonymous” and we all know what he spent the money on! Good for him!!
This was one of the most heartwarming episodes. It was very enjoyable to watch Steve take care of his Ohana once again. It seems as when his family is involved, it always brings out the best and worst of Steve. With that being said, both sides are great to watch. Alex and Taylor knocked this one out of the park with their acting skills and once again many emotions were shown in just a few looks from Alex. We have to rate this one a 9.5 for those reasons and more. Season 8 has been starting off well and we’re looking forward to many more heartwarming moments throughout.
The next episode is slotted for November 3rd and we will be back with that recap that weekend. It will be the Halloween episode and should be good even if it is being shown after Halloween due to a scheduling change.
