Hawaii Five 0 Episode 8.05 Kama’oma’o, ka ‘aina huli hana Recap

With another week’s episode in the bag, it is time for another recap. This episode was marked as the Hawaii Five 0 Halloween episode, and although it was shown after Halloween based on some scheduling changes, it did deliver on some more fright to cap off the week. Some fans love the Halloween shows and others, not so much, but this one had a little something for everyone as it juggled three different stories. Thankfully Susan and the editors have come forward for the recap to help you relive it all or catch you up, which ever way you look at it.

 

 

In the opening scene Junior is cleaning Steve’s carpet from an accident that Eddie has had because Junior was late in taking him out for his walk. A knock at the door interrupts the cleaning. Junior answers the door to a scary mask and surprise! Danny is there to scare Steve, but the surprise is on Danny because Steve is not there. It’s Danny and Junior’s first meeting but each knows of the other. Junior explains that Steve has gone to the court proceeding on the North Shore with Dr. Brown and Junior tells Danny he heard about his fall off the ladder. Danny blames that on Steve for buying a cheap ladder for the restaurant and this conversation nonchalantly explains why we will be seeing Danny wearing an arm brace for a while.

 

 

The next scene is one that has been waited for since last season. It clears up the questions from the last time Alicia was shown when she shot Dr. Gray in her kitchen. As Steve arrives, Alicia is carving a pumpkin.  Steve asks if she is ready to go to court but Alicia is clearly upset and confides to Steve that she lied to HPD in her statement about the death of Madison Gray. She told everyone that Gray had come at her with a knife and she shot her in self-defense, but Alicia now tells Steve what really happened and that she plans to tell the truth in court. She says she can’t lie on the witness stand. Steve tells Alicia she can never tell anyone the truth, that Gray deserved to die, and that her daughter needs her. However, Alicia seems to be determined to do the right thing no matter the circumstance.

 

 

After opening credits we are switched to a scene inside of the Florida State Prison. Lou is entering the death row section. He is standing in front of a cell with a man who seems to know him well, despite the fact Lou has never seen this man and doesn’t know him. The stranger’s name is Sebastian Wake who is a former east coast gun for hire and has been convicted for multiple homicides. He is scheduled to be executed at midnight and he has summoned Lou there to give him information on a case in hopes of delaying the execution.

 

 

Switching back to the island, we see a murdered man in a truck. Danny and Tani are on the scene. The man had apparently broken down while transporting a cargo of pigs on the way to the slaughterhouse. Tani tells Danny he has a close contact gunshot wound and shoots down Danny’s theories of robbery. She tells him of the folklore of Pale and Pali highway. Pale was the goddess of fire who had a relationship with a Hawaiian god who was half man half pig. The relationship ended and the two split the island in half agreeing to never cross to the other side. The man in the truck was taking pork across the line. As legend has it, if you do this, you will break down on Pali Road, an old woman with a white dog will appear, and the only way to appease the god is to feed pork to the dog. Of course, Danny finds this absurd, even after he has asked numerous questions, causing Tani to ask him why Steve has not shot him yet.

 

 

Enter Eric, who hasn’t officially met Tani yet. He completely makes a mess of this first meeting by mispronouncing Hawaiian terminology and a few other things. Eric shows Danny and Tani size six footprints he believes to be a woman on the roadside near the truck, and you guessed it, there are also footprints of a dog.

 

 

Now at HQ, Jerry is entering in quite a hurry to join Danny and Tani dressed for Halloween as to what Danny referred to as Marie Antoinette. Apparently, Jerry promised Max he would keep the tradition of dressing up as the Keanu Reeves movie characters just like Max used to do. However, he did not get a list of ones that Max had already done as this one is a repeat performance and Danny clearly informs him of such.

 

 

When Jerry hears about the Pali Highway case, he relays his own scary story of his experience on the road where he heard the dog growling, He shares that he saved himself by throwing spam into the direction of the growling and it stopped. Once again Danny finds this absurd but Tani seems more entrenched.

 

 

The next scene is back with Sebastian and Lou. Sebastian is taunting Lou with small talk, but when Lou is about to leave, Sebastian tells Lou he can prove Clay Maxwell killed his wife. He shares that Clay hired him to kill Lou for not dropping the case. This gets Lou’s attention.

 

 

Next in the ME’s office, Noelani is explaining to Danny and Tani that the body of Bryan Hanson was found partially entombed in concrete. It showed blunt-force trauma to the back of his head. Noelani thinks his murder could be connected to the murdered man on the Pali Highway. She tells another folklore story about shy trolls who inhabited the island that were excellent craftsmen and built roads and temples. Legend has it if anyone saw them at work they would turn them into stone. Based on this new folklore coincidence, Noelani believes that the two murders are connected by the folklore stories. Tani thinks Noelani is right.

 

 

We next see Alicia and Steve at the courthouse where an HPD Officer is testifying on the stand. Tani comes in and pulls Steve aside and tells him they have footprint evidence that the two murders are connected but no leads. Steve re-enters the courtroom and has Aiicia’s lawyer ask for a continuance as he needs her for a case they are working on. The judge grants it. Steve takes Alicia out.

 

 

Back in Florida at the prison, we watch as Sebastian is getting the top part of his head shaved for execution. He tells Lou, Maxwell paid him two hundred fifty thousand to kill him and again mentions he has proof.

 

 

Returning to HQ, Alicia and Steve are going over the evidence of the murders. Alicia thinks the murders are planned to follow the folklore stories of the Island. Tani interrupts telling them Eric has something they need to see.

 

 

Out at the table, Eric shows the team evidence of his search of Bryan Hanson’s place and that he found matching footprints in the rafters. There were no fingerprints but he was able to get DNA. Eric tells them he found moss and sea weed as well. With no one fully understanding this, Steve thinks there is about to be a kidnapping at one of the local private schools and calls for HPD to go there immediately.

 

 

The school playground where kids are being watched is the next scene and one little girl in particular seems to be the focus. On the way to the school, Steve is telling Alicia the legend of a woman who took her kids to Wahiawa Gulch when one of them went missing and was never found. Soon after that the woman died of heart break and the ghost of the mother wanders around looking for the missing child grabbing any child she comes across. Locals claimed to have seen her and she’s always covered in moss and seaweed so that is why Steve thinks there will be a kidnapping.

 

 

Just then Jerry calls telling Steve that a child has already been kidnapped. The child’s name is Lacey Bell and she had a cell phone on her so it can be tracked. Jerry traces the phone to Koko Crater.

 

 

Now at Koko Crater, Steve and the team search for Lacey. Tani finds her backpack with the phone inside, but no Lacey. They continue the search while we see Lacey tied and being lead with a rope by a hooded figure through the woods.

 

 

As the team continues to search, Jerry calls Steve with new information. It seems Eric got a hit off of the DNA of the second crime scene and it belongs to a Marissa Walker. Steve recognizes the name. She was a twelve year old girl who was abducted twenty years ago. She was abducted, raped, and left tied to a tree. While there she was attacked by wild boars and was horribly disfigured. After that she was taunted and called the half faced girl. Alicia now believes she’s recreating the legends as revenge. Jerry pulls up information saying that Lacey is the daughter of Hannah Bell, Marissa’s sister, revealing that Lacey is her niece.

 

 

Steve and Alicia go to talk to Hannah where Hannah tells them that she had refused to walk home with Marissa that day and blames herself for Lacey being taken. Alicia now believes that Marissa is moving on to the legend of the half faced girl and now wants revenge on her sister by recreating what happened to her twenty years ago with Hannah’s daughter.

 

 

The next thing we see is Marissa tying Lacey to a tree, showing Lacey her disfigured face, and telling her the monsters will be there soon.

 

 

Now dark, the team is searching the woods where Marissa was taken years before. Tani, Junior, and Eddie are introducing themselves and talking. Junior learns that Tani was hired on with Five-0 six weeks ago even though she was kicked out of the academy. You can see Junior taking that in to address with Steve in the future.

Switching back to the prison in Florida, Lou is trying to convince the warden that Sebastian can solve another murder and asks him to delay the execution, to which the warden says no.

 

 

Now back with Steve and Alicia, while they are searching for Marissa, Steve tells Alicia he has a way out for her regarding the murder of Gray. He says that they can say that she was working with Five-0 when all this took place and her lawyer can argue immunity and means since Five-0 has that. Alicia says no and that she does not want Steve to lie for her. Steve tells her it was his fault that Gray came after her in the first place because he involved her in the beginning. She says he does not owe her anything and still says no to his idea.

 

 

Danny interrupts as he has found a shack which he is not too pleased about having to go check out in the dark woods on Halloween. The team goes in to find Marissa has created a fake family at the dinner table with mannequins. Talk about creepy.

 

 

Suddenly Steve sees a figure running in the shadows and the team takes chase. As they follow, Steve is hit from behind and falls. As Marissa takes aim again at Steve, Alicia and Danny run up, Alicia shoots causing Marissa to run.

Back with Junior and Tani, Eddie is on to Lacey’s scent so Junior releases Eddie and he finds Lacey tied to the tree. She is safe and unharmed. Good job Eddie!!

On the run with Steve, Danny and Alicia, Marissa is incredibly agile and fast as when they try to catch her, she seems to just disappear. Jerry radios in to tell them they have Lacey safe and sound. Everyone is relieved, Steve especially so. As they turn to go back, we see Marissa climb down from a tree just where Steve and the others had been standing. She seems to have picked up some good skills living in the woods all these years.

 

 

Now back at the prison, we see the clock at one minute to midnight. We see the large wooden electric-chair, and the guards bring in Sebastian who looks at Lou sitting with the other people there to observe the death. We watch the guards strap Sebastian in and hook up wires to his hands, legs and head. As they are doing this, Sebastian seems to be reciting some poem or phrase.

 

 

Lou looks as if he’s trying to make sense of it. The last thing the guards put on Sebastian is something resembling a rubber face mask. When they pull the switch it’s pretty graphic. Lou appears to be stunned by what he’s watching and as smoke surrounds Sebastian’s head the guard turns the switch off only to find that Sebastian is still alive, (which was gruesome) so they throw the switch again to repeat the whole thing over. This seems to really get to Lou as it probably would anyone.

 

 

We next see one of the guards handing Lou an envelope that Sebastian asked to give to him after the execution. Lou opens it and it’s a map.

We are then taken back to see Lacey reunited with her mom as Steve and the rest of the team look on. There a little bit of flirting between Junior and Tani occurring and she asks him to go get some late night pancakes with her. Hmmm.

 

 

As everyone packs up to leave, Alicia gets a call from her lawyer saying the case has been settled. She gets eighteen months probation and Alicia tells Steve and Danny there is one catch, however. As part of the probation she has to be available to Five-0 to work on cases as needed. Steve and Danny are both very happy about this, so it looks like we will be seeing more of Alicia in the future. One can only wonder what part Steve played in that sentence, or if he did.

 

 

Next, the scene is switched to the Everglades National Park where we see an open box with tapes inside and Lou sitting not far from them. His phone rings and it is Steve saying he got his message to call. Lou tells Steve to get in touch with the Chicago DA because he won’t take his calls but he will take Steve’s. Lou tells Steve they finally got Maxwell, and that he has tapes of him confessing to his wife’s murder and putting a hit out on Lou as well. Steve tells Lou he will meet him in Chicago.

 

 

Our final scene is one week later, at the home of Hannah and Lacey. They are sleeping on the couch and Hannah hears something outside. She looks but sees nothing, but we see Marissa who has been watching them and we see her run into the darkness. Who knows, maybe she will be back next Halloween (or sooner?).

 

 

 

This episode was good but a little hard to keep up with and had some missed opportunities. There were too many stories and back and forth of scenes to be able to focus on one well. The best part of this one (besides Eddie) could very well be the long awaited explanation of Alicia and Dr. Gray. Whether you agree with it or not or like how things will proceed, it has been a long time waiting for the resolution, so glad it finally came. Our rating for this one is an 8.5 and at least one point goes to the fact that Eddie was in the show as we really love Eddie!
