The good old Five 0 as one knows it returned last night as episode 8.14 had some action and fun moments. The COTW returned more upfront and on take too with the diamond smuggler story. It was interesting to see Phillip Phillips in a role like this, to say the least. Here’s our recap that has all of this and more.
The episode begins at Roseland Cemetery, where you see an open grave that a hand comes out of. Along with the hand comes another person who is lifting up the body after he apparently had been digging it up. A security guard comes upon the action and he calls to have them stop as he calls it in. Just at that moment he is shot. You are then shown that man being buried alive.
After the credits roll, the show reminds us how beautiful the island is which is always nice to see. The camera pans in on Tani and her brother pulling up to a construction site on her scooter. Tani had gotten him a job there and she is telling him not to mess it up. He already seemed to know what was on her mind before she says anything as he says it before her.
They walk up to meet Adam who is also there and who was the one that helped get Koa hired. Tani thanks Adam and Adam introduces them both to Eli who is the site supervisor. Koa thanks them all and Adam and Tani start to discuss the new position Adam was given by Steve. Adam says he thinks he has the right person to help him out.
The next scene is at the restaurant that Steve still thinks is being called Steve’s. Steve and Danny are in a heated argument about who was responsible for leaving the door open as they just got robbed. Steve says Danny should have locked up as he is the key police and key holder and Danny says he could not have locked up as Steve had the keys in his pocket. Steve says he didn’t have pockets and Danny calling him Lieutenant Cargo Pants says he always has pockets. Steve denies this and well you get the idea how it continues.
Pua walks in and he breaks it up. He asks what had happened and what was stolen. Steve explains some expensive tools were stolen and that Pua has to find them, as this is the most important case of his life so Steve won’t have to hear Danny’s revisionist story for the rest of his life. At that point, Steve’s phone’s rings.
This brings the guys to the gravesite from the opening scene. It is the next day and Junior is there as they were called in when they found the body. Junior explains that what they think happened was the guard came across someone digging up a body and because of that was shot and made to be the replacement in the grave.
They continue to discuss it sharing that the body that was stolen was one of a Travis Hinkley. All they know about him is what is on the gravestone but he did just die a couple weeks ago. Steve says to Junior that they need to find out more and Junior says “Yes, Sir”. Danny addresses the Sir part and asks Steve if he plans on breaking him of that habit suggesting a shock collar. Steve jokingly agrees and he says he could buy two, one for Danny also.
Moving on to where Adam went, he is waiting for a girl that is just getting released from a women’s prison. He offers her a ride and tells her he cancelled her cab. She is quite reluctant and thinks Adam is trying to pick her up for another reason.
He must have convinced her as the next scene is by the water and they are discussing the real reason Adam picked her up. He wants her to become a CI for him and to go undercover with Hideki Hishiro who is one of the only criminal bosses left on the island since Five-0 swept it, resulting in numerous executions a couple of weeks ago. She asks a lot of questions and Adam tries to convince her with how much she will be paid and saying he is giving her a purpose. She says she cannot spend money if she is dead and she declines.
Back at HQ, Tani, Junior, and Lou are discussing the graveyard case. They have found more out about Hinkley. He had died from malaria which is rare to die from on the island. He had been travelling a lot including West Africa where he probably picked up the malaria. They discuss some theories including one from Lou who says maybe he had someone in his life that missed him so much that they would dig up a body. Tani says no way and Lou says there have been stranger things that have happened.
Meanwhile, based on the nature of the case, Steve thinks this could be based on a conspiracy theory or a strange type of ritual of some type so he and Danny are downstairs with Jerry. Jerry throws out some out there theories such as patient zombie powder, ghost marriages, etc., but Steve tries to ground him and get to something that could really be happening on the island. Jerry focuses and says there is a religion called Santeria that has been known to use human bones for healing ceremonies and they have been known to be in West Africa. Jerry still thinks it can be one of the other options, but Steve says maybe later and they will check out this first.
Not to forget Pua and the missing tools, Pua is at Kamekona’s and is asking him if he knows of some pawn shops that are not on the up and up. Kame says sure but it will cost him. After declining buying food as he is not hungry, Pua realizes he has to buy a lot of it to get the info from Kame.
Next we see Steve and Danny in the blue room. They have arrested Arian Ravello who they must have narrowed down to be related to the Santeria as Ravello is claiming he is being arrested against his religious rights. Steve says they searched his house and they found bones in his garage on an altar. The scene flashes to some satanic type of setting where there are many bones and strange things around his house. Ravello declines that they were human bones and Danny says we will see. He also had no alibi as to where he was the night before. While in the middle of this, Tani pokes her head in as Noelani has called and has something.
Steve and Danny are then shown pulling up to the airport where Junior and Noelani already are and there is an abandoned van there. Junior tells them to brace themselves and opens the backdoor of the van. In it is the body of Hinkley with his intestines cut open. Junior makes a joke which Danny approves and adds to and then they all discuss the possibilities. Junior says maybe a drug smuggling situation but Steve says that this seems to be more trouble than what drug smugglers would go through for a few kilos. It would have to be something more valuable.
At this time, Adam calls Steve which takes the scene to the two of them meeting. Adam says Jessie has said No and Steve tells him to give her some time. Adam mentions he is not sure how much time they have and Steve also confirms the need to actually be watching Hideki. Adam says he was left out of the bust that went down a couple of weeks ago for a good reason. Steve agrees and they shake.
Back with Pua who is now at a pawn shop and he is questioning the pawn shop owner. At first the owner knows nothing but is able to remember some info when Pua mentions he would grab the footage from the across the street gas station camera. He says he did not know the tools were stolen and that he will give him the name of who he sold them to.
Back at HQ, the team is around the table discussing the newest evidence. They found a print inside the latex glove at the scene and it belongs to a man named Voss. He is known to have smuggled diamonds into Canada and also has visited West Africa frequently. The team now thinks that Voss and Hinkley must have been partners and that Hinkley died before he was able to smuggle the diamonds in his body. Therefore, Voss dug it up to get them out. They also see that Voss booked a flight out of Hawaii after digging out the body, but never got on it.
Noelani calls Steve and Danny to her office and tells them that she did her own autopsy and found that there were other prior incisions in the intestine. He had not had them prior to death so it means someone else had cut it open. Steve assumes it was the mortician and that Voss is now after the mortician. They need to get to him first before Voss, he says.
Meanwhile Adam swings by the construction site looking for Koa. No one has seen him so Adam searches everywhere. From above the site he sees the porta potty and decides to check there. It is a good thing he does as he finds Koa there out cold and barely alive. He gets Koa into his car telling Eli there is no time for an ambulance and takes off.
While in the car, he calls Noelani and tells her what happened. He also says he is bringing Koa to her as he cannot take him to the hospital or the cops will get involved. She agrees and meets them with a stretcher outside the building.
She sees that he is barely breathing after they have wheeled him into the examiner’s room. Adam searches Koa’s pockets and finds what they believe to be opiates. Noelani gives him a Naloxone shot but it does not work. She says he needs another one and the scene flashes out as she and Adam are desperately pleading for it to be a success.
The scene then goes back to Steve and Danny who are now walking up to Roseland Mortuary. Things still seem slightly tense between them. They walk in and hear a muffled cry from the inside rooms. They find the owner; Mr. Rice all tied up and gagged. They ask where Voss is and he says on his way to his home as that is where the diamonds are as well as his wife.
We then see Voss breaking through the door of the Rice home after posing as a delivery man. He holds Mrs. Rice at gunpoint and tells her to open the safe. She is obviously nervous and Voss is also showing impatience.
Voss exits the house and gets in the car. Soon he is surrounded by Five-0 and Steve tells him to get out with his hands up. He looks like he is going to abide but he pulls a gun, to which they shoot him. He is dead on the ground and there are diamonds coming out of his body. He, too, had swallowed them in an ironic ending. (pun)
While at the scene Tani gets the call from Noelani. She rushes in and sees Koa sitting up so he obviously survived. She is quite upset and also scared to lose her brother. She says she promised their Dad to take care of Koa. She obviously did not know he was using and she finds out he has been doing so for over a year. She is concerned and Koa who seems to be shaken too agrees to stop saying he is sorry.
Moving on in the missing tool story, Pua pulls up to the place of the man who bought the tools. It appears that he and his family are working to rebuild their home after they lost it in the wildfires from the beginning of the season. The family is living in a tent and it is clear they have little. He tells Pua how he got a great deal on the tools.
Pua looks touched but we do not know how much until he returns to the restaurant where Steve and Danny are. He lies to them both and says that the trail has gone dead and he cannot find the tools. He feels bad he let them down, but Steve thanks him and says he did a good job and he appreciates it.
Pua leaves and Steve and Danny have a heart to heart about the status of the restaurant. Danny says they are not where they should be and he is concerned. Danny suggests bringing in a third partner and Steve says no as this was their thing and they did not need a third opinion in the matter. He says he will figure out something to make it work. They seem to have made up but both still deny any responsibility for the door being unlocked.
Normally that is where the episode would end, but there was one more scene. Jessie is sitting on the steps at Adam’s house when he pulls up. She says she looked into him and that she actually knew Adam’s brother, Michael as they had pulled some jobs together. She asks where Michael is and Adam tells her the short version of how he killed him. She asks if she will also be dead if she takes the job, and he promises her he will protect her. She agrees and they shake hands. Meet Jessie, the new recurring character and Adam’s new sidekick. It should be interesting to see how many times Adam will have to keep that promise to her.
This was an interesting episode as to how it was all handled. It was one of those that had many unrelated stories at once. In this case there were 4 of them and that is just too many to do any of them justice in our opinion. However, there was some action that was missing last week and some comedic moments along with a couple of touching scenes which made it enjoyable to watch. Adam’s story also has some good potential. Of course, the Eddie factor was missing so that makes the rating lower than if he was in it as we love Eddie! Therefore, we rate this one an 8.5.
There is no new episode next week and the show returns new Feb 2. See ya then!
